WHY PRODUCTIVITY IS MORE ABOUT CLARITY THAN SPEED

Many organizations try to improve productivity by increasing pace, launching more initiatives, or conducting more frequent follow-ups. New research suggests a different approach. When it is clear who does what, who makes decisions, and what each person is expected to deliver, performance improves. Clarity makes it easier to prioritize, make decisions faster, and focus on the activities that create results. Three factors are particularly important:

1. CLEAR PRIORITIES
When everything is considered important, focus becomes fragmented and productivity declines. Managers therefore need to help the organization prioritize more effectively in everyday work. This is not just about setting annual goals; it is about regularly clarifying what matters most right now. Clear priorities are evident when:

  • Employees know where to invest most of their time
  • Employees understand which tasks can wait
  • New assignments are accompanied by clear guidance on what should be deprioritized

2. CLEAR ACCOUNTABILITY
Many productivity challenges arise not because people work too little, but because accountability is unclear. When several people assume that someone else owns an issue, delays, duplication of effort, and uncertainty around decisions occur. Clear accountability is evident when:

  • It is clear who makes decisions
  • Every task has a designated owner
  • Employees know who to contact to move an issue forward

3. CLEAR FOLLOW-UP
Productivity increases when people know what is expected of them and receive feedback that helps them improve. Follow-up is not primarily about control; it is about providing guidance and helping people focus on the right priorities. Effective follow-up is evident when:

  • Expectations are clearly defined
  • Employees receive feedback on both strengths and areas for improvement
  • Follow-up activities help people prioritize effectively in their daily work

CONCLUSION: Productivity problems are rarely caused by a lack of effort. More often, they are caused by a lack of clarity regarding how work should be carried out. When priorities, accountability, and follow-up are clear, organizations improve speed, quality, and execution capability.
